Placenta Encapsulation - $200

***contracted birth doula clients will receive $25 off of this package.

Placenta Encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta by infusing it with steam and warming herbs, before then drying it, grinding it into a powder and measuring into vegetable capsules for daily consumption by the postpartum person.

Placenta has been used in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years, dating back to the first Materia Medica, which was written in 1576. Placenta was traditionally used to address an imbalance of Yin, and to support and replenish ones life essence, which is referred to as “jing” in chinese medicine.

Consuming the placenta in the early postpartum period is a practice that came about as a result of the “back to the land” movement of the 1960’s. It started with birthing people consuming their placenta after their baby was born in the form of a stew. A Californian Midwife named Raven Lang learned placenta encapsulation from Dr. Miriam Lee, a Chinese midwife and acupuncturist. Dr. Lee is where Raven learned about the Traditional Chinese Method of Placenta Encapsulation. She brought that wisdom into her birth work in the early 1980’s, and it has since radiated out into the larger birth community, with the practice gaining more momentum and popularity over the last 40 years.

The Placenta and cord are considered sacred to birthing person and baby, and are honored and treated with respect. Cultures around the world hold traditional practices around the birth of the baby’s “womb-mate” and cord such as burying it on sacred land, planting it under a special plant, making a placenta broth infused with healing herbs and drinking it during early postpartum. There are also innumerable references to the placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid in mythology. These old practices have been largely lost to us in the west - but we can reclaim them!

The Placenta Pill package Includes:

  • Placenta capsules in a labeled amber glass jar (roughly 100-50 capsules depending on the size of your placenta)

  • Detailed dosage and storage instructions

  • Umbilical cord keepsake

  • Placenta Art Print

  • 20% off discount code to shop all of the Mamma and Babe products from Fat and the Moon.

PLACENTA PRINT:

Placenta prints are a beautiful way to honor and remember your baby’s “womb-mate.” I offer two options for placenta prints. The first is for natural-blood prints, which I create with your placenta before it is washed and prepared for encapsulation. I also offer colored prints, which I use food grade dye to paint the placenta before printing. I use high quality multi-media art paper. Clients choose to frame and display these prints in their homes, or save as a keepsake. These prints are lovingly created and are subject to my own creative process as an artist.

ADD On: tincture - $25

Tinctures are great alternatives and additions to Placenta Pills. If stored properly, you  will still have plenty of the tincture after the pills have been used up, and it will be shelf stable for several years. A tincture is prepared by steeping a piece of your placenta in high proof alcohol for several weeks.

GINGER.jpg

I am trained in the Chinese method of Placenta Encapsulation (TCM). The preparation for this traditional method includes first steaming and infusing the placenta with warming herbs such as ginger root and jalapeno pepper before then processing, drying and encapsulating.

Safety: I have a designated sterilized space in my home that I use exclusively to prepare placenta. I have a current Washington State Food Handler's Permit and follow the OSHA Safety standards for Bloodborne Pathogens.
